RowTeic Rowing Performance Monitoring

Problem to be solved
Rowteic has designed a biomechanics software platform for the sport of rowing. The platform allows athletes and coaches to quantify and record technical and physiological performance. The underlying algorithm makes sense of data that can be collected using smartphones, replacing thousands of euros worth of hardware equipment, making sport, such as rowing, more affordable and accessible to all.
The chief challenges presented to the Nimbus Gateway included a design of the platform’s backend supporting a relevant cloud-based solution. In addition, design, research, and development of the platform’s frontend needed to be addressed. A means of securely supporting the athlete’s smartphone while in the rowing vessel needed further investigation, mechanical design, and 3D printing.
Solution
Using a combination of European Digital Innovation Hub (EDiH) services and two innovation vouchers, the Nimbus Gateway set about researching, developing, and evaluating an AWS fit for the existing Rowteic platform’s backend. In addition, research and amendments to the platform’s frontend were delivered.
Demanding a mechanical engineering intervention was the need to design and 3D print a suitable mounting system to secure an athlete’s smartphone to their rowing vessel. This was also achieved using the mentioned funding.
Further R&D is planned using future Enterprise Ireland funding opportunities.
Impact for the company
The engagement between Rowteic and the Nimbus Gateway has accelerated the availability of a Rowteic MVP and has opened piloting opportunities with potential clients (Universities) in the USA. Rowteic is very much beyond startup, and this achievement has brought the company closer to new and exciting commercial opportunities.
